Astrum ET220 Wireless Earphones Review

Here at Computers and More we are always in pursuit to bring you something new from even brands that are not very well known but are doing significant work worth noticing. One such brand is Astrum, a brand from Hong Kong established in 2008 but gained tremendous popularity due to their rich catalogue of devices ranging from as simple as a cell phone cover to as sophisticated as a quad-copter drone!
Dealing in a wide range of electronics they even have a diverse range of headphone and earphones. Thanks to Astrum today we have one of their much smaller but very interesting product the Astrum ET220 Wireless Earphones for review!

Supporting the Bluetooth v4.1 standard and having an impressive range of 10m the ET220 is equipped with a battery to last you for 5 hours easily while listening to music & weighs in at just 20g.
With a price tag of around Rs 2000 in India, though not mentioned, but we presume that these are powered by a pair of 9mm neodymium drivers.

What's in the Box?

The ET220 Wireless Earphones come in a slim box with the front side opening like a flap so that you can have a peek at the actual product resting inside a molded plastic case. The front and back enlists important details and specifications including the 1 Year Warranty that Astrum offers on the product.
These come in two colors, black and caramel brown, we have the caramel brown with us today. The shape is that of a neck band and the earphones at the end have magnets to stick to each-other when not in use and hang around your neck like a cool locket!

Accessory wise you'll get a bunch of spare ear plugs and ear hooks for easy replacement whenever required & a small micro USB cable is also included to assist you in charging the device once the battery drains out!
Volume control, mic and power button along with the indicator LED light are present on the right side wire while the small bulge carrying the Astrum logo has the bluetooth reception module and a vibrator to notify about incoming calls, connection establishment with the source device and power on/off.

Let's hit the Cords!

Music, Movies and Miscellaneous

To test the ET220 I connected them to my Apple iPhone 6S and it recognized and connected to the earphones flawlessly. Also connecting to a Laptop was hassle free giving it full marks in terms of connectivity.
Watching a variety of movies like the dialogue intensive Schindler's List & 12 Years a Slave to high pitch titles like Avatar and The Avengers, all came out in exceptional quality. Noise cancellation works flawlessly on these earbuds.
Music was played with the iPhone 6S default player and settings. Bryan Adam's Heaven and some of my all time favorite Bollywood songs sounded great with appreciable mids and lows. Eminem Legacy and Rap God were as clear as they can be but lacked the punchy bass hence sounding really flat to my disappointment. At full volume songs from 3 Doors Down, Motorhead or Metallica didn't crack which is a good sign as earphones with small drivers tend to suffer from this issue.

Gaming? Why not!

Time to Game! We tested the Astrum ET220 on a plethora of titles like Mad Max, Battlefield 4, Far Cry 4, Batman Arkham Knigh, Need For Speed: Rivals and Crysis 3 to name a few and the results were good enough for a non gaming audio device. The sound is clear but the lack of bass doesn't give a clear idea of footsteps especially in FPS. Even after over 90 minutes of gaming I didn't feel uncomfortable.

Wireless Range and Charging

Once fully discharged the earphones take around 2 hours to fully charge and last for a good 4-4.5 hours while listening to music or watching movies but reaches around 3 hours when using them for calling purpose probably due to constant use of the mic. But its really good for a device of this size.
Range is exceptional and 10m sounds correct to me, even across three thick walls of my house the signal didn't break. The vibration on the neck for notifications is not at all irritating and is just perfect plus the earphones are damn light so I can use them all day long & forget if something is around my neck at all!

My Verdict

Ok so its crunch time! Astrum ET220 are one of the better wireless earphones available in the market today at around Rs 1500 price tag. Some features are missing such as waterproofing or dust proofing which one would expect from earbuds of this quality and genre. Also these are surely not for the bass-heads but meant for those looking for a decent replacement for their stock earphone getting rid of wires completely and oh did I mention that these are tangle free!
With advent of cell phones like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that  have shunned the 3.5mm jack completely the market for decent wireless earphones is bound to bloom & Astrum ET220 might be one of the bigger beneficiaries of this tide due to its completeness as a package.
Pros:
  • Light weight & solid build quality
  • Non Tangle Wires
  • Excellent battery life and range
  • Good sound quality
  • Has mic and volume control buttons
Cons:
  • Lack of Bass
  • Not waterproof or dust proof
I give it a 7/10 earning our Silver award!
