Guide on Building a Gaming PC

What is a Gaming PC ?

A Gaming PC is a computer which is more powerful than an everyday normal computer. Its main job is to run high end games that require large computing power and high resources. There are mainly three things that form the main parts of a gaming pc. They are
  1. Very Fast Multi-core CPU
  2. A High- end Graphics Card
  3. Large Amount of high speed RAM

A good Motherboard, high performance hard disk, heavy duty Power Supply, HD LCD monitor are equally but the above mentioned things are needed the most. Here I will show you the step by step guide on choosing the components and how to build a gaming pc.

Guide on How to Build a Gaming PC

CPU – A fast multi-core is the primary requirement for a gaming computer. Intel and AMD are the two major leaders in processor manufacturing. ‘Intel or AMD for Gaming ?’ This question is asked by many gamers and there are very confused on choosing the right cpu for their gaming pc. The answer today is not very clear as both of them have different cpu’s that performs very good in gaming benchmarks. For sometime AMD had lagged behind in the race but after the launch of the Bulldozer FX aswell as the latest Piledriver FX series its back and is performing better than intel in terms of 'performance per buck'.
For Intel make sure to buy at least core i5 processor your gaming rig and for AMD start with at least FX Quad Core series. For CPU intensive games you may have to go for more powerful CPU's like core i7 series for Intel and six core FX series for AMD, these are the best processors that you can find for gaming PC.
Processor Good for Gaming
Intel Processor for Gaming – Core i5 series, Core i7 series.
AMD Processor for Gaming – FX series (Quad Core and Six Core), FX Vishera (Eight Core)

Motherboard – A good processor will naturally need a good motherboard. Here you need not have to buy the top of the line motherboard that will cost you the same as the processor, but a good mid to high range motherboard that will do your job quite nicely. The motherboard should have all the advanced features and should be from reputable brands like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and some more. These companies are known to manufacture some of the best gaming motherboard.

RAM – You will need lots of RAM for your gaming pc as the top pc games consumes high amount of memory. Get at least 4GB-8GB of RAM for your gaming system, DDR3 is the fastest desktop RAM out there so your try to get a motherboard that supports it. The leading manufactures in memory are Corsair, Ripjaw and Transcend.

Graphics Card – This is the most important component of your gaming system. Without Graphics Card it is virtually impossible to play games with respectable frame rates. Even if you have the best cpu, you cannot play games with full glory without a decent graphics card. A graphics card is the heart of the gaming pc. Nvidia and AMD (previously called ATI) are the two leading manufacturers of graphics card. Both are equally good but Nvidia has more range both in terms of price and models. Also drivers support for nvidia is far better than AMD/ATI. For Nvidia try to get a graphics card equal to or above GTX650 series. few helpful articles regarding Graphic Cards are:

Power Supply (SMPS) – All these power hungry devices will also need sufficient power to run and it can be only possible by using a heavy duty power supply or generally called as SMPS. Corsair, CoolerMaster and Tagan are the companies that makes the best power supplies for gaming and high end pc’s. The Recommend Power Supply for a gaming PC is at-least 600W. I have written an article about how to choose a power supply for your PC. Here are they:
How to Find Power Supply for your PC

Cabinet – A gaming cabinet is the one that holds are your components in it. Try to get a cabinet with large and extra fans. The cabinet should also be spacious for the proper flow of air between the components. Antec, Cooler Master, Corsair are some of the good brands that makes gaming cabinets.
Previously I had written a detailed Cabinet buying guide aswell as compiled a list of the top 5 budget gaming cabinets.
Best gaming Cabinet under Rs 5000

Mouse and Keyboard – You cannot experience the joy or comfort in games by using normal keyboards and mouse. Gaming Mouse and Keyboards are specially designed for rough or hard usage and are very comfortable. They also have many more features and advanced functions that will help you in your games. Logitech and Razor are the two best brands for making gaming mouse and keyboard. Do read the the articles on gaming keyboard/Mouse:

LCD or Monitor – A good 22 inch monitor is a must for gaming. You can also get much bigger screens if you want but 22’-inch HD LED/LCD screen is the best in terms of both price and performance. Samsung and LG are the two brands that produce high quality screens.

There are some other components that do not play that much importance for building a gaming computer but you cannot neglect them. They are hard disk, speaker and optical drive. For hard disk any 1 TB SATA II hdd from Seagate and Western Digital will do the job nicely. Speakers, you can choose according to your budget and any DVD Writer from Liteon, LG or Sony is sufficient.

If you have any more points to add then feel free to leave a comment and as always your queries are welcome.

  1. Thanks a lot. This information will be very useful in building a gaming PC.Like a Motherboard a Graphic card,Cabinet and a RAM.I am a new user so trying to learn the tricks of the trade. While surfing Youtube on clicking on Motherboard i also other brands like Asrock and Biostar. Since i am also writing a article on best gaming motherboard i found some good configurations for available with Biostar as well.

    1. Asrock is not a very good brand for high end configurations especially so i wary from recommending that to anyone. Biostar is good in the high end section and almost fine in the lower segment.
Good to know that, do share the link, I'll be happy to read it.
      Keep visiting.

  2. A good Motherboard, high performance hard disk, heavy duty Power Supply, HD LCD monitor are equally important for a Gaming PC which i agree. I am looking for some info as well.
Somebody says brand like Asrock and Biostar is good for motherboard above. Can you share some more details on these brand?

    1. I've commented about these brands before also, Asrock and Biostar are good brands but don't specialize in making quality components for gaming PC hardly any manufacturer uses them and their demand in the gaming industry is almost negligible.
But you can use them if you want there is no harm, a particular model from these brands would make it easier for me to comment on.
Feel free to ask nay further questions.

  3. Hey Vishvesh,i had a question: How dependable is Biostar for gaming purpose?have you heard of any recent mobos of theirs?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Biostar is a brand that I've never trusted upon simply because it doesn't provide you with as many options as the others in the gaming segment or any hardcore performance segment as a whole. Their BIOS set-up is really poor which gives you little room for customization, but yes i did review this BIOSTAR Hi-Fi Z77X (Intel Z77) mobo a few months ago and its quite good or i should say at par if not better than many of its competitor, though in terms of audio performance it s a killer.
So you see it all depends on models that Biostar puts up, most of their hardwares are not very good but sometimes they do surprise me even.
Feel free to ask any further questions.

  4. Actually i have had good experience with the Biostar model but of course i have not used all but its just that since i am suggesting a friend so i thought to check for opinion as well. So what specifically do you review?

    1. My reviews cover almost each and every aspect that you may come across in 'real-life'.
I tested its data transfer speed, over-clocking capacity, its compatibility and functioning during a cross-fire or SLI and most important as it is a audio-intensive board the music play-back quality.
If your friend wants to buy a mobo then tell me his budget that he wishes to spend on it, that way i'll be able to suggest you better options.

For Intel Processors: Asus H87-Pro Motherboard
For AMD Processors: ASUS M5A97 Motherboard

Please post your doubts or questions if you have any.

  8. Hi i have heard of this model H81MDC Ver. 7.2 from Biostar which supports the Intel 4th generation Core i7 and Core i5 processors in the 1150 package and has an
Intel H81 single chip architecture.Wanted to know if anybody has used this and for what purpose?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is a fine Motherboard that supports old class Intel processors considering that the 5th gen is already in the market and the way for the 6th or the alleged E-Haswell architecture processors is already paved.
You can easily use this motherboard for day to day purposes along with medium to high gaming or other processor intensive tasks like rendering etc.
I don't recommend this motherboard with poor cooling set-up or extreme work loads like multi GPUs.

  9. Any comments on the Bitcoin Mining game?is it here to stay?I have heard recently that Asrock have introduced it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes it has been around since a long time and will be here for many more years to come due to its monetary benefits at a very low cost and almost no effort.
The Asrock motherboard it is that you are talking about over here right?
Its just a new lunch from there part nothing more otherwise other companies had long back released other products that supported Bitcoin mining support.

  10. Hey thanks.. do you know which other companies might have launched this Bitcoin Mining?Needed to know.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Most of them are into it since long now includinh giants like nVidia who have special supposrt systems pre-built into their GPU modules.
Othe prominent companies include Asus, Biostar and even ASRock.

  11. There is Asrock Asus and Biostar launching Bitcoin mining but i hear a lot of mixed reviews about this particular game.Vishvesh, since you are a pro in this space can you tell me whats the hype about Bitcoin mining all about?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First and foremost....Bitcoin mining is not a game.
Its a serious activity with serious gains and losses....much like stock marketing.
Bitcoing mining to put it short is the process in which you, using your computer hardware especially the GPU now, process large to small chinks of data blocks via the internet and a free account. The more you will process ie work the more you'll earn in the form of Bitcoins which is a virtual currency and its rate in real world fluctuates like share prices of the stock market......you can cash it out in check or softmoney like paypal whenever you want.
An article regarding the same would be posted soon.

Planing to buy within next month. Also i'll be reusing my monitor and keyboard mouse. so would like a good config in 20-25k. could go to a max of 30k

  14. Why did you not recommend Biostar? I picked up Biostar Hi-Fi Z97WE on my assemblers recommendation. I have not noticed any major difference as a user yet i see Biostar getting negative remarks or worse people dont recommend it actively. Wonder why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You always come with the same query regarding the same motherboard.
Your assembler gave you that so that he can earn more money n to make you feel that you got more in less money. The profit margin on bio star products is higher than other brands.
We or anyone out there don't recommend bio start because of its low durability factor n less heat resistance.
If you'll use your system to heavy tasks like rendering, gaming n editing you'll notice a high temperature spike on your mobo which will affect the over all speed of your system n due to fragile capacitors the mobo will damage your components over a period of time with high temperatures n less conductivity.
It's a brand suitable for low range configurations meant for not more than mild office n educational usage.
Please don't ask the same questions again n again.

  15. My present set up is athllon xII 64, asusm2n 68 am plus, 2gb ddr2 and hd 5600 graphics card. My mb got busted not getting socket 2 mb. I have kept budget of 10k for upgrading processor , mb and ram. I prefer casual gaming and more of movies. Pls advice ideal combination. If i go for a4-6300 whether my existing hd 5600 will support.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Since you have a burned motherboard you've decided wisely to go for a whole new set.
First of all you cannot crossfire these two together but yes you can use the HD 5600 on this new configuration that I'll tell you.
For the budget of 10K I suggest the following:
      AMD A-Series APU A4-6300 3.7GHz Processor
      GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-DS2 Motherboard
      Corsair Vengeance DDR3 4GB RAM (CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B)

The motherboard is 1K expensive than a few but provides you a FM2+ socket support as well just in case you want to upgrade your APU in future you'll not have to buy a new motherboard.
The RAM is high frequency with a stable and reliable brand so you can't go wrong with that.
Feel free to ask any further questions.

  16. Whats the main difference with model F2A58M annd A88XM. 4gb ram should be single or 2x2gb ram. If i want to go higher hows a8-7600.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The 7600 is obviously a better choice over the 6300 simply coz its a quad core processor and higher clock speed.
These two have the biggest difference in terms of socket type, the F2A88XM is a FM2 aswell as a FM2+ type whereas the other is only FM2+.
If you go with the 7600 you can buy either

      Delete
    2. A 2+2 configuration is always recommended by me.
But it will cost you two slots and also a bit expensive than a single 4GB module.
So if you are on budget and your mobo will have only 2 slots then I'd say you buy a single module saving money aswell as a slot for increasing your RAM in future easily.

Its compatible with almost every component in the market including long graphic cards as-well so you'll be future proof with that.

  18. Thanks. The last abt psu. Confused between Corsair cx430v2 vs seasonic ss400bt. I have selected seasonic, hows the support availability all over india as iam located in mangalore

    1. While going through article on psu, came across a caution to avoid psu with active power correction factor. Can you simplify in layman terms in the psu guide. I dont use any ups

      Delete
    2. Actually one more psu antec 450w and antec 450p with pfc. From reviews found antec much better. Since iam going for bottom cabinet will the length of the cables will suffice for antec 450.

      Delete
    3. You got it wrong its that you should always go for a PSU with active PFC (Power Factor Correction).
The concept of active and passive PFC holds very little in household applications as we deal with low power machinery in this area If you are familiar with the concepts of capacitors and inductors then you'll understand it better.
To simplify it, you need Active PFC when you experience voltage surges that can obviously happen in houses easily especially in India. It helps to give a smoother voltage to the components and most important makes full use of the power being drawn from the supply hence giving a better price to performance ratio. But in case of PSU which rate till mere 1500W at most this efficient power usage is nullified as the difference is minimal.
Note: This doesn't eliminate the need of a UPS so you should buy yourself a UPS first.

All these PSUs are active pfc so you shouldn't be bothered about that part. The Corsair is the second best as it will give you a 32Amp output on the 12V rail with other factor remaining the same.
Your antec model was not found the nearest match was Antec VP-450 450W ATX 12V v2.3 which is a high grade PSU with dual 12V rails giving you a massive 32Amp output and hence more stability aswell.
I recommend that Antec one if you can buy it easily otherwise Corsair is always a recommendation from my end as its highly reliable.
Both have good support all over India so don't worry.
Yes the cable have sufficient length to cove your whole cabinet reaching all the components and ports easily.
Feel free to ask any further questions.
